The Jessie Street Apartments were originally built as a hotel in the 1940S. The property was later re purposed as affordable housing by Housing for Independent People. In 1999, MidPen Housing purchased the property and currently continues to operate this small community. After receiving a small funding award for some light repairs on the property, MidPen determined that due to the building's age and high cost to provide long-term repairs, it would be prudent to construct an entirely new building.
After conversations with the City of Santa Cruz Planning Staff and hiring a design team, the new Jessie Street is envisioned to be a 27 unit building with a community room, offices for staff, laundry facilities and additional service amenities. The current tenants will be temporarily relocated while construction is taking place, and will be able to return upon completion. Both the current tenants and new tenants will have access to onsite services provided by MidPen Services Corporation.
